Do You Believe in the Supernatural? Here’s Why I Do. - Pockets of Bliss

Do you believe in the supernatural? Because I do! Sometimes it’s hard to discern whether our minds are just overactive or if we’re truly witnessing something beyond the ordinary. But at 39, after years of reflecting on my own experiences and trusting my intuition, I’m confident in my belief: I believe in ghosts. Call it the supernatural, the afterlife, or whatever you will, but these encounters are more than mere figments of my imagination. I’ve experienced too much, from the age of 11 to now, to simply brush it off as coincidence.

Yes, I know the mind can play tricks, especially when we’re tired or emotionally drained. But when I can still, to this day, clearly picture what I’ve seen, I know it’s not just my imagination. If I had the artistic talent (which, let’s be honest, I definitely don’t!), I could recreate these moments with startling accuracy because they’ve stayed with me.

This belief doesn’t come from nowhere. My nan on my mum’s side was a spiritual person. She attended spiritualist churches and carried a calming, protective aura. I always felt safe with her. My uncle has had similar experiences, and once, years ago, an elderly clairvoyant woman in Plumstead told me that if I opened my mind more, I could do what she does. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but now… it makes sense.

I could fill pages with my ghostly encounters, but since spooky season is upon us, let me share a few stories. After all, what better time to dive into the supernatural?

My first encounter happened when I was 11 years old. I was at my best friend’s house (she’s still my best friend today), and we were playing hide and seek with her older sister’s friend. I remember seeing her run through the kitchen, into the utility room, and then into the garage. Naturally, I followed her.

Once in the dark garage, I crouched down behind some bikes and whispered her name, but she didn’t answer. After waiting for what felt like ages, I got up and went back into the kitchen, only to find my friend standing there, confused. She told me, "You look like you’ve seen a ghost," and honestly, I felt like I had. I told her what happened, and to this day, I can still vividly remember that strange, unsettling moment.

But that wasn’t my only experience. Another one involves my gorgeous rescue dog, Doug. Doug was a border terrier, and though we only had him for a short time, he made a huge impact on us. He had been a stray for a while, according to the rescue, and when he first came home, we let him adjust at his own pace. He spent a lot of time curled up in the garden undergrowth, where he felt safe. Gradually, he began to trust us, first curling up by the back door, then eventually coming indoors and sleeping beside our bed on a cosy blanket.

One evening, a few months after Doug had settled in, my husband fell asleep on the sofa because he wasn’t feeling well. I muted the TV and went into the kitchen, which was connected to the living area, leaving Doug lying near the living room doorway. I stood leaning against the kitchen sink, chatting away to him, when suddenly Doug was startled. He jumped up, barking, and looked down the hallway. His little back legs stiffened as he barked at something.

Here’s the strange part: at that exact moment Doug was startled, I saw a tall, black figure passing by the doorway towards the hallway. It wasn’t just me. We both experienced it. How could that be a coincidence?

And we have time for one more, right? When our son was around the age of 3, he was in bed between my husband and me. I remember looking to my left and seeing a figure standing next to our bed on my husband’s side. I adjusted my eyes and made out a tall, older lady leaning over us. Harry started crying, and I cuddled him, asking why he was upset. He told me there was a tall lady on Daddy’s side of the bed and he was scared. Even now, as I write this, I’ve asked my husband about that night whilst writing this blog and although he didn’t see anything, he remembers me and Harry seeing a tall lady next to him and knew we was being real. I remember my husband scooting up in our direction and saying 'why it had to be his side!

I still believe it was my nan visiting us. She was a tall lady, and I like to think she was just checking in. Last year, during a particularly tough time with my mental health, I felt her presence again. She passed away when I was 19, and we were very close. I sensed her around me, smelled her lavender perfume, and felt she was watching over me. There’s more to that story, but that’s a tale for another day (oh, cliffhanger!).

Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, spooky season is a great time to consider the possibility that there’s more to the world than meets the eye. There’s something both thrilling and humbling about it—the idea that we don’t have all the answers.

I’ve had enough experiences to trust what I’ve seen and felt. If you’re intrigued, stay tuned for more stories! Until then, enjoy the spooky vibes, and keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary… you never know what might be lurking just out of sight.

Happy spooky season!
